Joel

Courtenay

guitar, and ukulele

Hard rock and heavy metal are the genres that initially inspired Joel to pick up the guitar.  Soon he developed interests in other musical styles, which led him to study classical guitar and music theory at Leeward Community College.  He continued his education at the University of Northern Colorado where he received a Bachelor of Music degree in 2003.  He’s performed in Mānoa Valley Theatre’s productions of RENT and The Addams Family.

He also performs in the rock cover band “Dirty Thunder”.

With an appreciation for all styles of music, Joel really enjoys helping his students learn the kinds of music they want to play.  When he’s not teaching music, Joel’s is likely to be practicing judo at Hawaii Judo Academy and also training jiu-jitsu at North Shore Jiu-Jitsu Club.  Joel has been teaching at Chuck James Music School since 2012.
